Step 22: L‘Aber Wrac’h … up the river

L‘Aber Wrac’h… when the names start to sound more Breton than French

The weather, wind and Atlantic swell had cleared allowing us a smooth passage and to leave Roscoff eventually. Marinas here are usually a trade off: big ones with all the amenities and showers which can be turned hot to your liking or small backwaters idyllically awaiting their awakening.

Roscoff was the former but served us well. Our sail out of port was especially exciting in the beginning: navigating in between shallow patches and rocks while taking the short passage between mainland and the Île de Batz. Something we only dared due to good weather and visibility.

Then we met the first waves of Atlantic swell mixed with an interesting current creating little swirls around us. Something we are used to by now, but still an odd phenomenon when they break suddenly and unexplainably around you or become steep.

We decided against another shortcut into the estuary forming Aber Wrac’h, but took the main channel into the river. Last minute, we decided against the marina and a friendly harbour master came by in his dinghy helping us with a buoy.

Safely moored, we had the best spot. Sunset to port, the river to starboard and such a calm mooring which we hadn’t experienced in most marinas. No wonder André had to ruin the silence and take the dingy for a spin 😇
