Step 23: L’Aber Ildut

The last “Aber” on our route! “Aber” is the Breton word for river mouth. It originates from Celtic and means something like carry away. And yes – life can truly carry you away in these estuaries.

We decided to cut our route south to the Atlantic Ocean and out of the English Channel short. The wind was against us at the very tip of the Channel and chances were high for steep waves against tides and a bit too much wind from the front onto our bow. So we planned in a short but sweet stop in the middle along our way.
Nevertheless, we sailed! This time not being rushed by the tidal window, we played around with our light wind sail and enjoyed simply sailing along not having to make too much way.
There is not so much to tell about this tiny coastal village. We had a good night sleep and enjoyed the company of the “typical”sailors here: a few French and English boats, as this is not one of the busy “highway” stops on the route down south (or north).

Aber Ildut is know for its algae farming, so there was lots of manoeuvring in this shallow river, but besides that not much was going on here, which is why we liked it so much. Green pastures, the slowly flowing river and the distant smell of cattle all made it feel a little like back home in NL.
