Shelter from wind and wave
Seeking refuge from the wind, rain and swell.
We were bound for Bilbao initially, but the Atlantic showed us once more that travelling by sailboat means having ideas rather than fixed plans. The wind came from the front onto our bow, it was meant to turn so we could set the sails, but it did no such thing and rather increased in strength. The waves were building up, we had not only the usual 1m ish Atlantic swell but they merged themselves with waves generated increasingly by the wind, which created a rather uncomfortable washing machine state once more. Simba had enough, Lisa had enough, André was feeling miserable. Thus, we quickly checked for a plan B in Lisa’s pilot books and identified a small fishing port in Lekeitio as our final destination for the day.
Lekeitio is rather unspectacular, the usual fishing and small leisure boat harbour. We went for a “Anlegeschluck” in the only nice little bar in the harbour (in Germany you have to drink beer or any other drink of your choice when you moored your boat for the day as if to celebrate you survived another day). We spent some decent time cleaning ROCI from saltwater that had splashed all over her during the battle against wind and waves.
Short stay for one night, while it was nothing special, we truly enjoyed the Anlegeschluck and its secret feeling of “we made it another day” which kind of sticked with us.
Tomorrow is another day and wind and waves are supposed to have eased up, so we will head for Bilbao eventually.
